Rendering Competition Entry for CG WS24/25

Now, after you have seen all the features, obviously we should merge them together in one scene and see what comes out of it.

This is the entry for our WS24/25 CG Rendering Competition. Theme this semester was “Chaos in Harmony”.

We envisioned a scene where we could use PBR and highlight its amazingness~~! and also have some artistic fantasy to it.

We opted to go with a Cyberpunk-ish city, where everything is orderly, working, lit up, sun is setting. Just another normal day.

And, in the middle of the street, you see a Tesla-like car driving down with doors open with soap bubbles coming out of it! What happened to the driver! Has he gone nuts? The car is about to be lifted in the air!

Therefore, the city is in harmony, while a citizen is causing chaos!

We present you, our scene: Cyberfreak!

Stages of post-processing

This is without any post-processing.

After that, denoising is applied.

denoised

Then, we bloom it.

And at last, we use the ACES tonemapping.

Et, voila! We finally have our beloved scene.

This scene is all about mixing the wild with the calm. Above, the sky is quiet, with soft colours that make everything feel dreamy. Nearby, neon lights from buildings add a cool, glowing vibe. The street is so quiet you could almost hear a pin drop, but the car? Oh, it’s having none of that. It’s all about those bubbles, floating around like they own the place. It’s weird, it’s fun, and it’s definitely got that “what’s going on here?” vibe.

It involved a lot of coffee, matcha tea, bit of head-scratching, and humongous amount of “let’s try this and see what happens.”

Features list:

  • Thinlens camera, visible with the DoF in the distance.
  • Iridescence, displayed by the soap bubbles.
  • Normal and Roughness maps, displayed by having neon lights scatter on a wall in a non-linear fashion, and water puddle on the ground.
  • Halton sampler for less noise.
  • Postprocessing effects such as denoising, bloom, and ACES (Academy Color Encoding System) tonemapping, used as default in Unreal Engine 4.
  • Area lights to accentuate the sky and sunlight.
  • Rough dielectric material on the car.

P.S. There is an easter egg in the features list, and it is colorful! Can you find it?
