About the name 🍄

Muhomor is the Russian name for the fly agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria). The word has Slavic roots and is directly connected to flies: "muha" means fly, and "mor" refers to death or killing. This connection is not symbolic. Flies are naturally attracted to fly agaric mushrooms. Historically, the mushroom was used as a simple way to deal with flies: pieces of fly agaric were mixed with milk or water and left out, where flies would feed on it, become sluggish, and eventually sink into the liquid. This practice is documented across various Slavic and European regions. The same idea appears in many languages and cultures. In German, the mushroom is called Fliegenpilz ("fly mushroom"), and similar names exist in other European languages, all referencing its association with flies.
